Artist's Description
This is really a portrait of Kevin Green, a living history volunteer at Stones River National Battlefield. He portrays Sgt. William Holland who was born a slave, escaped when Union troops occupied middle Tennessee. He worked for the Union Army then joined the newly constituted 111th Regiment United Stated Colored Troops. He was captured by invading Confederate Cavalry and was returned to slavery. Once again he escaped to freedom and rejoined his regiment. In 1865 the regiment was given the mission to find hastily buried Union dead throughout middle Tennessee and return the remains to the new National Cemetery at Stones River and re interred the soldiers. When the Regiment was disbanded at the end of the war, he and many other former black soldiers stayed at Stones River and created the community of Cemetery. He bought land adjacent to the cemetery and in 1909 was buried there.
